What fish are biting in Virginia Beach right now? ›

Just about everything's available now! Inshore, Red Drum, Cobia, Spadefish, Sheepshead, Flounder, Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel. Offshore, Tuna, Dolphin, Marlin, Tilefish and Seabass. Big Red Drum are showing throughout the lower Bay and along the Virginia Beach oceanfront.

Wade out or take a charter to battle Striped Bass, Red Drum, Spotted Seatrout, Flounder, Catfish, Perch, Crappie, Shad – the list just keeps on going. Jennette's Fishing Pier: All of the fishing piers around Nags Head are great.

The sheer quantity of angling opportunities makes our waters some of the best in the world. Brackish fishing, fly fishing, offshore and inshore charter fishing, sound and head boat fishing, surf and pier fishing – all with the season continuing throughout the year.

For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

More fish will come in to feed during high tide, especially at dawn or dusk, as there will be more water in your fishing hole, but certain species will prefer low tide. Take advantage of low tide to read the beach and locate sand banks, dips, hollows, and other structures.

Surf fishing is allowed throughout the town of Nags Head on the public beaches, however anglers are urged to watch out for swimmers, surfers, and other vacationers sharing the waves.

The pier has a blanket license for all anglers, so if you don't have a fishing license, you're covered. A daily fishing pass costs $14 for adults and $7 for children ages 12 and younger. A three-day pass costs $36, and a seven-day pass is $80 (children pay half on passes).

Located in South Nags Head, it is the fishing pier nearest to Oregon Inlet. The pier is lighted and is open 24 hours a day. The historic pier has been serving fishermen for over 50 years! NO FISHING LICENSE IS REQUIRED to fish on our pier.

Beer is allowed on Outer Banks beaches. Glass containers are not allowed.

Mullet is the preferred cut bait of choice and should be chunked in cubes/strips for hook placement. Bloodworms can bite so use caution. They are the most expensive bait on the Outer Banks but are VERY effective! Remember: small hooks catch more fish, so you may only need a size 4-6 hook for most fish in the surf.
