The heat pump went out today. A big old Trane. I have it apart already. I think the fan motor is shot and I may as well replace the big cap in there while at it. The fan motor was just humming and hot as hell, but that may be the big cap? I have to look into that. I had to pull it apart so I pulled the motor while I was at it. I will pull the cap in the A.M., it became hot as hell out there of course, I have no AC lol. It could have been worse maybe? It could be in the dead of winter and then I have not heat and it is more of a pain to work on. I do have two fireplaces, one gas fireplace and electric heat in the ceilings if I need it. PS, the motor turns freely but runs off 230V AC and I don't have an outlet for that. I think where I go for the caps they can test it. I do have an isolation transformer and variax that both go up to 130V I can hook up directly. That may get her spinning. I am not putting it back in and wiring it back up and trying anything with exposed wires. Anyone know their HVAC? Just another trip along the way.

I do not but have taken two 110 lines and fused them for 220v if voltage is your problem. Or unplug your stove and use that outlet if you just want to to test it. Or as you said, take it to a parts store and have it tested there. You getting the heat wave yet? I’ve found I can’t operate in freezing temps and layer and bundle but AC notsomuch unless I use wet towels all night.

That is debatable.

It’s a lose-lose choice I’ve set for myself. If I can moderate it will be good, but I suck at moderation of anything. I’d did get Diet co*ke to sip as a chaser, not regular, after reading manslick’s 2022 Lifestyle Change thread earlier.

If you have a problem, that is a totally different story. I am trying to save my daughters life, I know. Things as still rocky but progress is slow.

90 but the humidity is not that high. In the sun is another story. It has to be over a hundred. No different from NY in the summer but the humidity is higher there due to being closer to the ocean and the great lakes. I had always heard about the heat and the humidity in Va. while up NY but I am at about 1500 ft and on the very western end of the state probably 400 mile from any large body of water. The winters, that is why I came here. I here people complain, they have no clue. The dryer outlet, thats the ticket. Nah, I will have it tested by someone smarter than me and that don't take much. I just learnt how to spell I.Q.

The one time I nearly killed myself off drinking was when I drank two 1.75L bottles of Canadian Mist and chased it with 8 cans of Sprite in a 4 hour period. Lived through the night but woke up plastered and stayed that way all day at work. My boss was very forgiving. That's what happens when a bunch of car guys hang out after work in the parking lot on a Friday night.

I was going to order a pizza tonight but decided to wait 'til tomorrow. Trying a parlor I haven't been to before because they have 18" pies. My usual place discontinued their XL 18" pies. Pizza pie sizes drive me nuts. I grew up with XL pizzas in the 28-32" sizes. Now all the chains and many indies only go up to 14" and call them large - what a joke.. 14" large.. HA!

Spent last night with a few friends at Churchill Downs for some night time horse racing. It was the first time in 3 years that I've visited the track. It wasn't a great night for picking winners. First 4 races, I picked a horse and bet across the board. 3 times my pick came in 4th! Twice it was in the money and faded at the end, the other was coming on fast but ran out of time. Cashed a couple of tickets and then went cold again. Lots of favorites winning so payouts were meager.

Last race, my pick ran 11th in a 13 horse race. She faded bad in the stretch after running around 3rd. A longshot hits for $94 to win. Another longshot was 3rd paying $30 for a show ticket. The trifecta payed over $30,000. If only I was so lucky!

Overall not too bad... lost about $30 for the night on bets. Considering that admission and 1 drink was $38, that's a cheap evening.

I'm a licensed air conditioning contractor. Ask anything you want - I'll do what I can to help.

By what you've written so far - yes change the run capacitor. Not all - but most units these days have a dual run capacitor - which is two capacitors housed in one body. They are generally inexpensive. It is important that you replace the one you have with one of identical capacitance rating (in microfarads).

If you do get a new run cap. and the motor still doesn't start - its shot (assuming you've got proper voltage and there's not anything else unusual going on - and there usually isn't). If you change the motor yourself- again - it has to be one with an identical rating profile: horsepower, voltage, RPM, etc.

I already have the cap pulled and I think I can get one locally tomorrow. The fan was trying to turn but just humming, also super hot, couldn't really touch it. I pulled it out also and have it on the bench. This unit is old, I think 2005, it is a Trane XL14I. I don't know if the fan motor is fried. The place I will go to tomorrow may be able to test it. If not I will pick up the cap and replace it and throw a few bolts in for the fan motor and fire it up. I have the fan off the motor. The cap is a 45/5uf 440V. I checked it with a cap checker I have and it showed next to nothing, a couple of picofarads. Ams I on the right course captain?

I found plenty of them starting at 360. I worked in manufacturing all my life, if it cost over 40 bucks to manufacture I would be surprised. I found used ones also for around 150. Now, if I only had a contractors discounts and connections! It is a GE commercial motor model CPNX70370526010 230 volt 1/5HP, I dont have the RPM written down next to me. All the specs are on the motor and I have all the paperwork with the schematics etc.

Sounds like you on course sir. There's a good chance that a new capacitor will get you back up.

Wholesale.... those motors are about $80.00. If it's OEM - they're usually quite a bit more.

One more thing - there are some Trane condenser fan motors that have a non-standard motor mount. The little mount studs (and the holes in the top louvered panel) are not the standard distance from each other. No way for me to know from this vantage point if you've got one of those models.

New cap in, old motor good, up and running. I just put a few bolts in to hold it to test it. Now I am going to take the fan bracket that holds it off again, and go in there and clean it all out. Cap was 22 dollars. I think I saved myself a couple of hundred as opposed to having someone come over here? Thanx for the help captain. I sliced my finger open on the fan shroud, that sucker is sharp. If I were running that department they would never go out the door with sharp edges. Takes about about a minute.

I have to use bailing wire to hold the cap in, it is taller and skinnier then the original.

Sorry about that finger. I've worn form fitting gloves 100% of the time for about 20 years now. Being a guitar player... cutting, slicing, and dinging my hands eventually got old.

I started wearing them regularly about the same time my band started gigging regularly and making some money. At that point others were relying on me.

Lesson learned, as machinists, we never wore gloves, not smart. I was moving my hand and accidentally brushed my finger against it, that is all it took. I have made millions of parts and none them ever left with burrs or sharp edges unless called for in the print.

Ok, I can finally admit it. I can say I'm old and out of touch.

Sitting here watching "Name That Tune" and I have no clue as to the name of most of the songs they have played. Every once in a while they'll throw out a Tom Petty song, or an old classic, maybe even a showtune, but I have no clue when it comes to Fatboy Slim, or Shakira, or One Republic. I know who Justin Timberlake is, but I couldn't sing a single one of his songs. Dua Lipa, Drake, Doja Cat, I wouldn't know a single song by any of them.

I don't listen to radio much anymore, and it's never a "today's music" station. I can't even listen to hip hop/rap... it makes me change the channel or turn it off. The only other style that makes me do that is opera.

Symphonies, choral works, concertos, piano sonatas, I love listening to them. Big band music from the 40s is great. I don't really care for the really heavy country music, but I can tolerate it. Some of the songs are good. Old soul music, blues, rock and roll... Love 'em all.

Only thing better is young and out of touch. I like me some 70s music!
