Emergency services have descended on Stockport this afternoon (Thursday) amid two police incidents.

All trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport are currently suspended amid reports of ‘trespassers’ on the line. Emergency services are at the scene of the ongoing incident between the stations.

Witnesses have said the A6 Wellington Road North, near Stockport train station, has been taped off by police. The road is currently closed, according to the Bee Network.

The M60 is also blocked in both directions after a crash near Portwood Roundabout with long delays building.

Travel service Inrix has said: M60 in both directions blocked, long delays due to police incident between J27 A6188 Tiviot Way (Portwood Roundabout) and J1 A5145 Travis Brow (Stockport Pyramid).”

The Manchester Evening News has contacted Greater Manchester Police for more information.

Fire service called to ‘reports of man on top of the viaduct above M60’

In a statement released this evening a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said crews were called to reports of a man on top of the viaduct above the M60 in Stockport .

A spokesperson GMFRS said:

Just before 4pm this afternoon (Thursday 1st August), two fire engines from Whitehill and Offerton fire station, along with the Technical Response Unit from Ashton, were called to reports of a man on top of the viaduct above the M60 in Stockport .

Crews arrived quickly at the scene. The man removed himself from on top of the viaduct and back to safety.

Firefighters were in attendance for around an hour and ten minutes.

There are delays of 50 minutes clockwise reaching back to J23 on the M60 and delays of 20 minutes anticlockwise reaching back to J5 after the earlier police incident.

All lanes have now reopened on the M60 following the earlier police incident but severe delays remain.

The traffic alert service Inrix says: “Severe delays due to earlier police incident on M60 in both directions between J1 A5145 Travis Brow (Stockport Pyramid) and J25 A560 Crookilley Way (Brinnington).

“Congestion to J5 (Princess Parkway) for anticlockwise and back to J23 (Aston under Lyne). Traffic is also slow along the M56 back to J5 (Manchester Airport) clockwise. Roads through Stockport are also severely congested.”

There are ‘severe delays’ on the M60 and roads through Stockport also ‘severely congested’.
