The campaigners who lobbied councillors entering Stoke Town Hall for the meeting urged the council to withdraw from the deal because of the recent takeover of Capital and Counties by a South insurance company. The "pull out" call was backed by the district Labour party. But Mr. Southern emphasised that the council had a legal agreement with the developers which the City had to honour or face the consequencies of being sued for massive damages. Assurances He said that during negotiations with Capital and Counties before the takeover their executives had given assurances that they owned no property in South Africa and they did not borrow South African money.
